CHOICE Review

Contributors to this timely work agree that the next decade will be critical to the survival of many hospitals. They advocate the need for development of health promotion programs in hospitals and support their position with an examination of changes in the health care system that have had a financial impact upon hospitals. The volume opens with a discussion of the definition and evolution of the health promotion concept. Major emphasis is placed upon the role of hospitals and physicians in health promotion as it differs from the role of treating illness. One chapter is devoted to the specific involvement of physicians. Other chapters address less thoroughly the roles of nurses and other health-care providers in health promotion programs. The specific advice offered on implementing and managing health promotion programs would be helpful to hospital administrators, the audience to which the book is addressed. Greater emphasis upon the role of nurses in health promotion would have enhanced the volume. Extensive bibliographies follow most chapters. The contributors are qualified by credential and position. A useful resource for health promotion and health administration collections. -V. B. Byers, SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse
