CHOICE Review

Allen, who retired from the Library of Congress in 1985, has written an extremely valuable book on Russian views of America to 1917. Drawing upon the extensive archival materials in the Library of Congress, Allen relates the views of Russia's ambassadors, traders, and intellectuals regarding the US. The book, which is fascinating reading, shows that the Russians were very interested in the US, even if they did not quite understand its institutions and ideas. They did, however, appreciate American inventiveness. One important revelation is that the Russians studied American agricultural methods, especially the use of the tractor. The tractor was a vital part of the plan to increase production under collectivization, but, in the end, its use could not overcome the inefficiency of collective ownership. Allen emphasizes that the Bolshevik revolution did not interrupt Russia's interest in the US; in fact, we are witnessing a new phase of this interest in the person of Gorbachev. Rich, annotated bibliography. University libraries. -D. J. Dunn, Southwest Texas State University
