The longest-running work of its type, this directory was first published in 1928, when it showcased 401 institutions. Nearly 80 years later, the bulk of American Universities and Colleges (AUC) features over 1,900 accredited institutions of higher education offering a baccalaureate degree or higher. AUC also features general information on higher education and professional education. In the 17th edition, material is up-to-date through the 2005 academic year. Each institution was invited to provide information on the following subjects: description, accreditation, history, structure, calendar system, characteristics of freshmen, admission, degree requirements, distinctive programs, ROTC, degrees conferred, fees and expenses, financial aid, departments and teaching staff, enrollment, student body characteristics, international students, student life, publications, library collections, buildings and grounds, and chief executive officer. Reflecting the growth and diversity of the higher education enterprise, this directory includes numerous indexes to help guide readers. This reviewer's own institution was not featured (although it fits the criteria for inclusion), which may indicate that the guide is not fully comprehensive.
