CHOICE Review

A carefully edited and organized work that surveys the emergence of a more organized ocean environment as expressed particularly through the 1982 UN Law of the Sea Convention. The various contributors are prominent authorities, and a no-nonsense tone pervades their articles in a field too often cluttered with political rhetoric and verbiage. The essays review the law of the sea negotiations and the effect the Convention has had on the international distribution of income and wealth. Perspectives and policies of three Third World regions are assessed (Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia), and US ocean policy is also reviewed. This book provides a good introduction to law of the sea themes and the competent analysis throughout will be appreciated as well by experts, although few findings are not already developed elsewhere in the literature.
