****For the new edition of this standard reference (cited in BCL3, Sheehy, Guide to Reference Books, and ARBA), first published in 1969, every title from the eighth edition was considered, evaluated, and then either retained or deleted; about 15% of the 7,304 annotated entries are new. (Reference and Research Book News is included, but, strangely, SciTech Book News has still not made the cut.) New also to the ninth edition is inclusion of periodicals with World Wide Web sites, listed in subsections after each section of print titles; some sections don't contain such listings either because online periodicals in that subject area don't exist, or because the available ones are not good enough to be included. Booklist Review

The well-known team of periodical reviewers, Bill and Linda Katz, have compiled a new edition of this useful work. Assisted by 153 consultants, more than 40 percent of them new to this edition, they have surveyed over 70,000 periodicals and selected "the best and most useful for the average elementary or secondary school, public, academic, or special library." As with past editions, this edition has undergone significant revision. There has been a slight increase in the number of entries from 6,521 to 6,665. The publisher states that 20 percent of the titles are new to this edition and the remaining 80 percent have all had their annotations rewritten. Approximately three-quarters of the contributors are academic librarians. Although the organization of the book remains unchanged, several sections have been expanded. Of the 145 alphabetically arranged subject categories, nine are new to this volume. They include Aquaculture, Classroom Magazines, College and Alumni, Comic Books, Food and Wine, Hospitality/Restaurant, Music Reviews, New Age, and Women: Feminist and Special Interest. Within each subject category, entries are arranged alphabetically by title. Sources of microform and reprint copies and online and CD-ROM access are listed for each periodical. Each entry has an indication of audience or type-of-library level. Critical annotations address writing style, format, coverage of material, and audience appeal. In the past, the Board criticized this book for its lack of coverage of microform materials and electronic indexes. The editors are to be congratulated for adding this information in this edition. In future editions, the editors might address the lack of uniformity in annotations. For example, the annotations for the Chronicle of Higher Education and Poultry Science note that they contain classified job advertising, but those for American Libraries, Library Journal, and Aviation Week & Space Technology do not. There is nothing comparable to Magazines for Libraries. Magazines for Young People [RBB S 15 91] is an abridged version, covering some 1,300 titles. A valuable tool for collection development, Magazines for Libraries should be considered by academic and public libraries. Libraries owning the previous edition may wish to retain it for reference on periodicals not covered in the new one. (Reviewed Sept. 1, 1992)
