CHOICE Review

A discussion of, and investigation into, the role of exercise among middle-aged and older people. The numbers in the studies are often small and sampling techniques not always clear. Some conclusions: Since epidemic and endemic diseases are now under control, osteoporosis, atherosclerosis, and diabetes are major concerns. Exercise may be helpful. The effect of exercise on senility is ambiguous. Weekly exercise contributes to fitness. Training methods for top athletes may be modified to aid fitness among the aged. Aerobics for the aged is of uncertain value. Daily muscle training for workers made sedentary by mechanization has value. Exercise among nursery governesses and industrial kitchen workers may be helpful in reducing back pain and muscular strain. Other topics are also discussed. There is no index. Maryhelen Vannier's Physical Activities For the Handicapped (CH, Mar'77) uses a more pragmatic approach and arrives at many useful conclusions. Level: upper-division undergraduate and above. -N. Doscher, emeritus, Brooklyn College, CUNY
