Booklist Review

Sloan seeks to clarify the ``complex matrix of rights, duties, and responsibilities that govern the doctor-patient relationship, especially in the context of the terminally ill.'' In this review of relevant legal and judicial decrees, Sloan traces the evolution of social thought on the right to die. References include cases of euthanasia, abortion, suicide, refusal to cease life-support systems, and termination of life-support systems. Sloan describes the controversy surrounding the Uniform Rights of the Terminally Ill Act (a complete copy is appended) and provides a state-by-state highlight of significant provisions of each state's living-will act. Also appended are statements from the AMA and the Catholic church. Not strictly for lawyers or legislators, Sloan's resource may help the individual make personal decisions or call for political action. An accessible overview of a very complicated issue. DPD.
