CHOICE Review

Fawcett, a well-published and recognized authority on international law, has produced an interesting and useful study on international law and the impact of new technology on its traditional concepts. He provides a general analysis of the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, drawing parallels between its utility and that of the established International Law of the Sea Convention. More specifically, Fawcett applies the Outer Space Treaty to various areas of space activity, such as communication and remote sensing satellites, space stations, and the military uses of space. Much has been written about the 1973 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and its implications for the US ``Star Wars'' program, but Fawcett argues that the Outer Space Treaty also seems to prohibit the deployment of some ``Star Wars'' technologies. In Fawcett's view, no human activity has ever been so fully international as space operations; therefore, an understanding of the international law that applies to this realm is vital. His book fills a gap in the literature on space operations. Brief bibliography; good index; appendixes of important documents. Upper-division and graduate students.-G.N.
