School Library Journal Review

ea. vol: (World Leaders Past & Present Series). CIP. photogs. reprods. bibliog. chron. index. Chelsea House. 1987. PLB $16.95. Gr 8-12 These books won't inspire, encourage, or even educate most readers, because it is doubtful that anyone has the stamina needed to read them to the last boring page. Pedantic, dull, and verbose best describe the writing style. Even the most interesting character, King Arthur, suffers the ``blahs.'' An example of the writing is: ``Because in these tales the Arthur of history is being replaced by the Arthur of story, it is appropriate to stop now and summarize our knowledge of the Arthur of history.'' Almost all of the dark and poorly reproduced black-and-white photographs would be more at home in a textbook. Most students won't find enough biographical material for a report, and the books won't draw recreational readers. Gayle W. Berge, Creswell High School, Oreg. (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 6-9. Although the writing is somewhat dry, this biography is a credible introduction to the life of Pope John XXIII. The pope, then Angelo Roncalli, was born to a poor farming family in northern Italy. When young Angelo showed academic prowess, he was sent to school and later to seminary, where he was ordained as a priest in 1904. Walch spends a great deal of time discussing Roncalli's appointment as apostolic visitor to Bulgaria, an event that probably will not be of much interest to young readers. For student reports, discussion of his tenure as pope and the ecumenical council he convened will be useful. Illustrated with plenty of black-and-white photographs. A brief bibliography (comprising primarily books from the 1960s) and a chronology are appended. IC. 282'.092 (B) John XXIII, Pope / Popes [CIP] 86-13719
