CHOICE Review

This is a composite of four studies by Garreton Merino written under different sponsorship and at different times and published in Spanish in 1983. The volume was later translated with some rearranging and updating. It is full of modern jargon used by some social and behaviorial scientists. All this makes for a difficult and disjointed work that lacks clarity and continuity. The book is divided into three parts: "Political System in Chile until 1973; Military Regimes and Authoritarian Capitalism in the Southern Cone;" and "The Chilean Military Regime and Prospects for Democracy." There is a short welcome postscript on the 1988 plebiscite and the transition to democracy. Each chapter has adequate notes but there is no bibliography. Although this volume has some valuable information and conclusions, other recent books about modern Chile (such as Julio Faundez's Marxism and Democracy in Chile CH, Mar '89) are preferable. Most of this volume is of use only to some Latin American experts. C. W. Arnade University of South Florida
