The increase in the number of HIV-infected women and their newborn infants during the past decade requires an examination not only of the medical aspects of the disease, but the social implications as well. This book provides a "comprehensive review of the implications of AIDS on individuals, families, and society" for those who provide services to and care for HIV-infected women and children. Contributors are experts in their particular fields. They address diverse topics including the medical impact and management of the disease but emphasize the psychosocial aspects of caring for children and youths--particularly issues related to poverty, human rights, and discrimination. Case examples illustrate programs that have responded to the crisis and represent models for providing a range of services. Educational strategies are presented for working with drug-dependent parents and their at-risk children, and with adolescents, foster parents, and others. Useful appendixes include a directory of public child welfare agencies, social services departments, and other organizations that serve children and families, and reprints from the American Academy of Pediatrics.
