To business people, students, and PC users, the specialized language of computer science is often incomprehensible. Freedman's Computer Glossary can serve as a guidepost to this computer jargon. It provides clear definitions, illustrations, and photos of historical and state-of-the art computer topics including software, micros, minis, mainframes, superminis, and mini-supercomputers. The fifth edition contains some revision, especially newer developments, such as X/Open and Dr. An Wang's death. Compared to other computer dictionaries, such as the Dictionary of Computing, ed. by V. Illingworth (3rd ed., CH, Mar'90) and M. Covington and D. Downing's Dictionary of Computer Terms (2nd ed., 1989), The Computer Glossary is practical, well illustrated, well written, and extensive. For example, the entry "DIP Switch" defines these switches and states that although they were designed for the engineer to use, those setting up their computers may need to adjust them. Thus, it gives enough information to help users to figure out owners' manuals.
