CHOICE Review

The Library of Congress has one of the largest collections in the world, a magnet for scholars and researchers. The collections are so large, however, that it is difficult for those in interdisciplinary studies to take full advantage of the resources available or even to know about them. Under the aegis of The Center for the Book, Schreyer (University of Delaware Library) has developed a guide to the collections for those studying the history of the book. The book has two parts. Part 1 describes each of the relevant collections in the Manuscript Division, the Rare Books Room, and the Special Collections Division. Part 2 discusses the value to the researcher of the Copyrights Records and Deposits Office, the Law Library, the Geography and Map Division, the Music Division, and the Prints and Photographs Division. Schreyer's guide is thorough and useful, but she grants that a large part of the Library of Congress-its general collections-is not even touched upon. It should also be noted that the work focuses on the book in the Western world (particularly in the US), which also leaves large portions of the Library's resources undescribed. The book is handsome, well designed, and easy to read. Black-and-white illustrations enhance the text and give a better sense of the wide variety of resources available. Upper-division and graduate students and general readers.-N.J. Quinlan, University of Colorado
