CHOICE Review

Locke and Latham are two of the foremost researchers on goal setting and task performance. Their previous book, Goal Setting: A Motivational Technique That Works (1984), was written for the manager; the present work was written for the academician. This book traces the evolution of motivation theory, and constitutes a compilation and evaluation of empirical studies and theory. Each chapter has a clear conclusion; topics covered are aspiration, effort, persistence, task strategies, commitment, feedback, boredom, stress, and task complexities. The major innovation offered is a crystallization of the authors' notion of the "high performance cycle." In addition to name and subject indexes, the book contains appendixes of previous studies and guidelines for conducting future research. Essential for academic libraries serving graduate programs in industrial and organizational (I/O) psychology or programs in business or public administration. -T. L. Brink, Crafton Hills College
