CHOICE Review

Bray nicely summarizes the status of our knowledge about cell movement. He has contributed significantly to the field and is well qualified to prepare such a synthesis. The 22 chapters cover all major aspects of cell movement and are divided into six parts: cell movements in the light microscope, the actin cortex, muscle contraction, cytoplasmic microtubules, cilia and flagella, and integration of cell movements. Bray also discusses several related topics, including muscle differentiation, embryogenesis, and bacterial chemotaxis. His descriptions of current knoweldge are clear and direct, and he points out areas of uncertainty that require further research. Many excellent light and electron micrographs; line art well done and useful (but it would have been better in color); informative tables; extensive and well-organized index. Bray's treatment is up to date, with references through 1991. Recommended. Advanced undergraduate; graduate; faculty. L. M. Prescott; Augustana College (SD)
