Van Scotter, now with Junior Achievement in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and senior author of Social Foundations of Education (3rd ed., 1991) brings together information that should be readily retrievable from sources already available in any library serving a college or school of education. The information in the one-page summaries in Chapters 2 ("Issues Confronting Schools"), 4 ("Biographical Sketches"), and 5 ("Reports on Public Schooling in the United States") are essentially homogeneous distillations of information from articles cited in Education Index; the facts and data of Chapter 6 can be more extensively found in two US government annuals, Statistical Abstract of the United States and The Condition of Education; the chronology (Chapter 3) can be found in any current foundations text; the listings in Chapter 7 ("Education Associations, Organizations, and Agencies") can be found in the Encyclopedia of Associations; the citations in Chapter 8 ("Reference Materials") are standard education "stuff" from the Guide to Reference Books, etc. As a background source for an undergraduate Introduction to Education course or for a college without an education department, this title may be helpful but it is not a necessary purchase for medium or large academic libraries in institutions where the discipline of education is taught.-S.
