Booklist Review

Hancock and Carim's AIDS: The Deadly Epidemic [BKL Ja 1 87] stressed that the poor stood to suffer the most from the dire immunosuppressive malady. This lucid, unbiased report documents that their contention is correct and that dealing with AIDS in poor nations and among poor U.S. blacks and Hispanics has been impaired by racial and ethnic bigotry. In the popular press of North America and Europe, blacks, especially Haitians and Central Africans, have been blamed, both subtly and blatantly, for spreading the disease. Economically impaired Third World public health facilities and the supposed sexual and drug-using behavior of Third World peoples have been inflammatorily reported, inciting racist political responses in the U.S., Britain, and France. Sabatier concludes with the hope that ``the worldwide tragedy of AIDS . . . may eventually force attention to the vulnerability caused by unbalanced development, both between rich and poor nations, and within our individual societies.'' A fine addition to both Third World and AIDS studies. Notes; no index. RO.
