Maintaining a library collection that answers and serves patrons' requests and needs is a time-consuming, ongoing process. Librarians need to know about books and other materials but also about vendors, patrons' habits, and more. Magrill and Corbin cover these bases well, first providing an overview of collection development and then discoursing on the organization of collection development and acquisitions work. Lengthy advice on bibliographic searching and purchasing individual items, special and nonbook materials, and serials follows, with attention paid to such business vitals as controlled-order plans, negotiating contracts, and electronic ordering. Dealing with gifts and exchanges and evaluating the collection through such tools as computerized circulation studies are the authors' concluding concerns.
