CHOICE Review
Any huge book like this one (588 pages of fine print and 41 chapters) is bound to contain a mixture of interesting and tedious selections. The articles and documents were published from 1948 through 1989 (most in the 1980s). One of a series of "Studies on a Just World Order" under the general editorship of well-known peace advocates Falk and Mendlovitz, the volume would be useful for courses on world order as a good representation of the "peace" perspective (i.e., supportive of values associated with peace, nonviolence, social justice, nuclear abolition, economic redistribution, and ecological balance) or conversely, against "the current war system," the nation-state system, and generally opposed to the foreign policies of the two superpowers. But even as a text, this book needs substantial pruning and it is much too formidable and ponderous for the general reader. Upper-division undergraduates.-J. L.
