A collection of articles concerning the study of play, many presented initially at the 11th annual meeting of the Anthropological Association for the Study of Play. Most of the articles cover research, done in the US, on a wide range of topics using various research methodologies. The approach is interdisciplinary with the authors representing the following disciplines-sociology, education, physical education, anthropology, psychology, performance studies, American studies, and leisure studies. As refereed articles, they are very uneven in quality. Some articles make very significant points, while others suffer from seriously weak analysis. The volume, unfortunately, has no introduction; this omission leaves the reader with no theoretical focus or framework into which to place these papers; also, there is no index.
