Magill and Salem House are models of clarity, concision and sturdy production values. This is the third set in a series that will cover the Nobel laureates in all six Nobel Prize categories: literature, physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, peace, and economic sciences. Already completed are the sets covering the literature and physics prizewinners. This series is one of the few reference sources in English to offer comprehensive coverage of the Nobel Prize winners and to be organized according to prize category. 112 Nobel laureates are examined in this set. Their lives, careers and accomplishments are given attention in articles that also feature their Nobel lecture and reception. In addition, there is a lengthy and informative essay that identifies the origin of the foundation, the selection process and provides an overview of the history of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry. CHOICE Review

This set devoted to Nobel Prize winners in chemistry is the latest in an ambitious series that will cover all of the Prize's laureates and categories. Like the previous counterpart set for physics (CH, Feb'90), it has been thoughtfully conceived. It consists of signed articles on the laureates arranged chronologically by the year they received the Nobel Prize; in a few cases collaborators have been treated jointly in one artcle. The articles all follow the same format and are consistent in tone and approach. Each includes a photograph of the winner, biographical information, an abstract on the research specialization, and an article divided into sections on the award (presentation, lecture, and critical reception), biography, scientific career, and brief primary and secondary bibliographies. One inconsistency among the articles is in the bibliographies, which mix under the heading "Secondary Historical Works" a variety of nontechnical and biographical articles and chemistry textbooks and monographs. This set also offers a solid historical article by Robert J. Paradowski on the Nobel Prize, particularly in chemistry, an alphabetical list of prizewinners, a "time line" arranging winners by year, and a useful index by subject, country, and name. Despite a glut of reference works on the Nobel Prize, this set stands out as perhaps the best comprehensive source now available for reference information devoted to the Nobel Foundation, the Prize, and the winners in chemistry. Highly recommended for academic libraries at all levels with chemical or history of science collections. -H. Lowood, Stanford University
