CHOICE Review

Reviewing Lukehart's book was a refreshing experience, renewing the hope that textbooksmithing is still gainful professional enterprise. His book is a wonderfully complete tour-de-force for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students, yet it is not encyclopedic. In less than 500 well-designed, highly readable pages-that also includes many good study questions, and carefully selected, up-to-date (through 1983) references-Lukehart provides first an 11 chapter introduction to the subject of transition metal organometallic chemistry. Included are binary and substituted metal carbonyl complexes, cyclopentadienyl and other pi complexes of carbocylics, alkenes, alkynes and enyl ligands, and all else one would expect for a modern course. This reviewer was especially pleased with the second section-three chapters on applications such as organic synthesis and industrial homogeneous catalysis. Data are well-presented with a fair display of data on physical properties and reaction conditions, both so important in teaching students new to the field. Chemistry is an experimental science, and Lukehart has not forgotten that humble fact. One is left with the clear impression that he has successfully worked the material through several classes of students. This confident careful effort deserves the large following it is likely to have. Highly recommended for college and university libraries.-L.W. Fine, Columbia University
