CHOICE Review

The first section of this book on life-threatening illnesses sets the tone for the second and third by explaining the theoretical bases of family nursing, discussing the impact of life-threatening illness on the family, and providing guidelines for family assessment. The second and third sections set the book apart from others on family nursing. The second section demonstrates the use of assessment guidelines in families with specific life-threatening illnesses; the third discusses both assessment and interventions with different types of families (single parent, gay couples, etc.) in various health-care settings (intensive care, hospice, etc.). Each chapter provides an overview of the health problem, a discussion of assessment models, and the application of relevant theory in a case study. Tables and genograms demonstrate specific guidelines or examples in the case studies. Extensive references are provided. Although written by different authors, chapters have a coherence often lacking in edited works. Recommended for nursing students at the graduate level. Some upper-division undergraduates might find the book useful, but most would find the theory difficult to understand and apply.-M. Flickinger, Clark Technical College
