CHOICE Review

In this timely volume, Fromberg, director of early childhood teacher education at Hofstra University and author of Early Childhood Education: A Perceptual Models Curriculum (CH, Jun '77), examines the educational opportunities which an extended-day kindergarten offers. Stressing the importance of viewing the child as an active and individual learner, Fromberg discusses the context and content of kindergarten education with respect for the intelligence of the reader, the teacher, and the child. Specific classroom examples arise from well-defined principles of developmental and educational theory. Prospective and currently practicing teachers will find useful material throughout the book; they should find the discussion of the curriculum issues in the mathematics, social science, and science sections particularly stimulating. Whether working in full-day or half-day classes, teachers will also be helped by the models Fromberg presents of techniques that encourage children's inductive reasoning and problem solving. The book is well organized with a bibliography, graphic material that does not distract but expands information; and a list of books appropriate for kindergarten children. This is an excellent addition to an outstanding series. Highly recommended.-S. Sugarman, Bennington College

Booklist Review

Fromberg's intent is not to argue the pros and cons of full-day (versus half-day) kindergarten, since the extended day is ``a reality already chosen in many communities.'' Instead, her text is designed for teachers, offering concrete suggestions on formulating a schedule that will offer adequate academics, socialization, and skill development. Attention is also paid to working effectively with the widely varied experiences and abilities of young children. Although intended for a professional audience, the book may be useful to parents seeking specifics on a typical full-day kindergarten program as a basis from which to evaluate their local schools. It could also be helpful as a resource for those considering home teaching. References, bibliography of children's books, and index.
