Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

A beautifully-produced set, ruggedly bound for heavy reference use, the fourth in a series that covers the Nobel laureates in all six categories of the Prize: literature, physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, peace, and economic sciences. In the comfortable and clear style characteristic of all Magill references, each 7-10 page signed essay, in addition to providing comprehensive information on a laureate's life and career, describes the speeches and commentary that accompany the awarding of the Nobel Prize, and includes primary and secondary bibliographies and a portrait of the laureate. The first volume of the set also includes a history and overview of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, and a time-line. Annotation(c) 2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Includes bibliographical references and index.

CHOICE Review

This three-volume set follows other Salem Press compilations about Nobel laureates literature (1987),chemistry (CH, Jan'91), and physics (CH, Feb'90) sets that were well received by reviewers. Magill plans to cover all six categories of Nobel Prizes, which will mean a large investment for those libraries obtaining all of the sets in the series (cost and method of updating not known). Organized chronologically (v. 1, 1901 1944; v. 2, 1944 1969; v. 3, 1969-1990), the signed essays (eight to ten pages) are nontechnical and conclude with a list of scientific publications (not comprehensive and not fully cited) and a list of secondary works with summary contents. In comparing the entries for "Aleksei Petrovich Pavlov" in the Dictionary of Scientific Biography, the similar volume published by Garland, Nobel Laureates in Medicine or Physiology (CH, Mar'91), and Nobel Prize Winners, this reviewer found some information to be unique to each entry. Nobel Prize Winners has an adequate author, subject index. Even though the set lacks some of the qualities desired in a reference tool, e.g., a comprehensive index, the contributors have done an excellent job of digesting the biographical information for ready reference use. Recommended for undergraduate reference collections.-T. C. Trawick, Troy State University
