Library Journal Review

This attractive introduction to herpetology is the fourth volume in Facts on File's Animal Series. Major reptilian and amphibian groups are described in taxonomic order with accompanying world geographical distribution maps and excellent color photographs. Evolutionary theory is nicely interwoven throughout the work, along with significant anatomical, physiological, behavioral, and reproductive details. This sets the book apart from others of similar title that mainly catalogue the variety of reptile and amphibian species. Eighteen contributors and excellent editing have produced an authoritative text thatwith technical terminology kept to a minimumwill be useful to a wide range of readers from YA through college. Highly recommended. Frank Reiser, Biology Dept., Nassau Community Coll., Garden City, N.Y. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. CHOICE Review

Contributions of 19 internationally recognized authorities, including editors Halliday and Adler, provide the taxonomically ordered text sections of this encyclopedia. Current summaries of taxa above the species level emphasize numerous aspects of herpetozoan morphology, evolution, reproduction, classification, distribution, ecology, folklore, and natural history. Well-chosen examples at the species level add considerably to the depth of coverage and to reader appeal. Technical terms have not been avoided, but the overall vocabulary and simplicity of writing style are such that general readers will enjoy and comprehend the book. Presentations are accurate and the few errors are usually by-products of oversimplification. The volume's attractiveness is increased immensely by the abundant and superb artwork panels of David M. Dennis and Michael R. Long. Color photographs, maps, anatomical drawings, and various schematics are among the numerous illustrations. This book is more detailed than most of the numerous encyclopedic-style amphibian and reptile volumes that have appeared in recent years, e.g., J.F. Breen's 1974 Encyclopedia of Reptiles and Amphibians; Maurice and Robert Burton's 1975 Encyclopedia of Reptiles, Amphibians, & Other Cold-Blooded Animals; J. Honder's 1975 The World of Reptiles and Amphibians; and R. Oulahan's 1976 Reptiles & Amphibians. Highly recommended for high school, college, and public libraries.-E.D. Keiser, University of Mississippi
