Library Journal Review

Like another Clio dictionary in political science published recently, Jeffrey M. Elliot and Robert Reginald's The Arms Control, Disarmament, and Military Security Dictionary ( LJ 9/1/89), this is a concise and comprehensive resource on a very important topic. Although the subject matter of these two dictionaries overlaps--Ali's book defines nuclear war terminology, and the Elliot/Reginald book focuses on a broader terminology of war and peace--very few of their entries are duplicated. Ali's book has 300 entries, twice as many as the Elliot/Reginald dictionary. Together, the books elucidate the often arcane vocabulary of nuclear weaponry and politics, and should be acquired by libraries as companion volumes. The entries on concepts, events, and weapons are cross-referenced and indexed, and each entry includes a definition as well as a discussion of historical context and current significance. Both dictionaries will help citizens make informed decisions on related political issues.-- Jennifer Scarlott, World Policy Inst., New York (c) Copyright 2010. CHOICE Review

As the language of political science becomes more specialized and erudite, ABC-Clio responds with yet another dictionary of terms particular to a distinct field. An appealing feature of the "Dictionaries in Political Science" series is the inclusion in most entries of a paragraph in which the author addresses the term's "historical and current relevance." This, surely, is an important feature in an undergraduate library. Unfortunately this may require concessions in terms of the work's overall comprehensiveness. Eric Semler's The Language of Nuclear War (CH, Jul'87) covers more ground than Ali's work. The Semler book includes many brief entries interspersed with longer essays on such thought-provoking topics as "Mutual Assured Destruction" or "Nuclear Winter." Ali's work omits many of the briefly defined terms that Semlar includes, but then Semler does not label a paragraph with the rubric "Significance." Semler's book is the better value and, where only one source can be purchased, it should be that one. -P. Heller, Norwich University
