Lists acronyms (some 19,000) alphabetically, gives a preferred definition and any qualifying information, and the department using it. A reverse index gives the meaning and then the acronym, abbreviation, or initialism. Areas of the federal government covered include the judicial, legislative, and executive branches; the military, independent agencies; and the various committees and commissions. Also included are acronyms for agency programs, publications, and other data products and materials. Acidic paper. Annotation(c) 2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

CHOICE Review

This guide lists nearly 20,000 currently used abbreviations, acronyms, and initialisms covering government agencies, programs, projects, automated information systems, and terms found in regulations and other publications. It also covers acronyms for international agencies and activities in which the US participates. Terms were derived primarily from agency compilations and are heavily weighted toward departments such as the Environmental Protection Agency, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The editor has compiled several other government-related directories and guides covering data bases, statistics, and federal libraries. There is no comparable guide to government acronyms. Until now one has had to rely on general lists such as Acronyms, Initialisms & Abbreviations Dictionary (13th ed., 1989) and on a few publications geared toward specific agencies. Despite the extent of the entries, this is not an exhaustive list. There are obvious omissions, but the editor promises an expanded version in the future. This is the first of what this reviewer hopes will be many editions of this title, expanded to cover agencies in a more balanced manner. Recommended for college and university reference collections and depository libraries. -M. Strange, Northwestern University
