CHOICE Review

There have been a number of recent books on time as an essential factor in obtaining advantage in global competition. An excellent one was Time-Based Competition edited by Joseph Blackburn (1991). To be competitive, the thesis goes, manufacturing firms must shorten the total time from product concept to the marketplace. This work by Clark (Harvard Business School) and Fujimoto (Tokyo University) is from the same genre but narrows the focus to the product development phase and is based upon a six-year study of the automobile industry. By examining in detail the practices of 20 automobile firms in North America, Europe, and Japan, the authors were able to identify the pattern of critical factors that lead to superior performance in product development and which provided an important source of competitive advantage. They also suggest ways to extrapolate their results to other industries. Well written and well researched, the book makes a significant contribution to the field. Highly recommended for upper-division and graduate collections.-J. S. Tarleton, College of William and Mary
