Bolland has provided a much needed work on the new country of Belize. Although no definitive, it does provide the reader with information concerning the Maya past, Spanish and English colonialism, population, racial aspects, education, economics, and politics. The principal flaw is that the word ``creole'' is used from the beginning, but it is not until page 53 that a definition is given: descendants of slaves and British settlers. (Throughout Spanish Latin America, a creole is a Spaniard born in the New World.) The increasing role of the US, replacing Great Britain as the major influential power in Belize, is well covered.
