Palmer's guide is a revision of his 1983 handbook for beginning online searchers. The online services examined range from the professional, research-oriented BRS/SEARCH and DIALOG to others such as CompuServe and The Source. Readers are given a brief history of online searching in the 1950s, followed by a sound discussion of how online systems are organized, how command languages operate, and how searchers use ``strategies and formulations.'' The book is filled with examples of sessions, menus, resources for further information and study, and even examples of client interviews. Index.
