Booklist Review

Four volumes in the Handbooks for Library Management series, which is designed to provide quick answers in specific areas of librarianship. Cataloging and Catalogs provides an examination of the literature on cataloging and classification practices. A major portion of the book is devoted to comparing the effectiveness of online, microfilm, and microfiche catalogs versus the traditional card catalog. Circulation, Interlibrary Loan, Patron Use, and Collection Maintenance examines trends in the acquisition of materials, budgeting, personnel practices, space allocations, automation, and patterns in the use of library resources. Arranged by general topics, the text also provides a historical analysis of library trends over the past 25 years with an eye toward analyzing current practices and assessing future needs. Library Education and Professional Issues examines the state of professional university training. Using the years 1960 to 1983 as his time frame, Kohl analyzes accredited programs in library schools, their administrations and faculties, admission policies, student enrollment, and research and publications. Reference Services and Library Instruction offers a vital assessment of the quality of traditional library services in the last 25 years. Data gleaned from library literature are used to describe the effects of automation on reference techniques, patron satisfaction, and library organization and management. The text also evaluates library instruction, specifically as it relates to the preparation of reference librarians. These handy volumes will prove quite helpful to library administrators and other personnel charged with the responsibilities of decision making. Each book is indexed. SKB.
