School Library Journal Review

Gr 8 Up Each of these volumes contains the same, albeit useful, foreword, introduction, and list of prevention and treatment agencies . The reading level varies, but the writing is clear and the illustrations well-employed. The Downside of Drugs covers nicotine, alcohol, narcotics, stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens, and ``new'' drugs (crack and ``designer drugs''). Legalization is debated specifically for marijuana, but a discussion of drugs in general widens the perspective. The history of drug legislation is traced through the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986. Alcohol is covered in detail because aspects of Prohibition are used in arguments both for and against legalization of other drugs. Drugs & the Family is the story of one family's personal experience with drug addiction. The account is related alternately by a mother and her son whose use of pot, LSD , and harder drugs causes him to spend seven months in a psychiatric hospital. The effects of Kelly's growing addiction on his family are apparent, and the mother's reaction to the situation is a good model for parents. There is no perfect ending here. Kelly is currently in school and coping, but admits to occasional drug use. All three books will be useful additions to libraries serving young people. Dennis Ford, Canandaigua Junior Academy, N.Y.
