Publishers Weekly Review
Starting with a history of awareness of AIDS, this volume of the Encyclopedia of Health series takes an investigative tone, tracking the epidemic globally and offering a statistical analysis of cases. The search for cures, the work of the Center for Disease Control, ramifications of AIDS testing programs and material on discrimination and caring for victims are included. This addition to the growing library of AIDS material for teenagers is strongest on epidemiological detective work; the chapter on protecting oneself from the disease is generally good, but occasionally falters in its glibness, such as the author's admonishment to only have sex with ``safe people.'' He does not, however, offer teenagers suggestions as to how they can broach the subject of drug use or sexual histories with potential partners. Ages 12-up. (Feb.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. School Library Journal Review
Gr 7 Up A good addition to the growing number of books on this disease, most of which become quickly outdated because of research discoveries and current events. This readable book is suitable for teenagers with no background on the subject. Sexual knowledge is assumed, and no slang is used. Appendixes include a glossary of medical terms, a current bibliography, and address lists with hotline numbers. The index is not very complete. Effective black-and-white photos, posters, and charts add to the emotional impact. Check discusses early discoveries and where they led (why ARC is no longer defined separately, for example) and research to late 1987 (GM-CSF; gp160). Lawsuits and legislation relating to the disease in the U. S. are mentioned. There is little coverage of the social movement AIDS has inspired, although a few striking photos of demonstrators and hospices bring it to light. Compelling reasons are given not to fool around with this virus, as well as predictions about the long-term impact of AIDS. The recommendation for ``behavioral vaccination'' may leave readers with as many questions as answers, but they are the right questions. This is not as visually compelling as Hawkes' AIDS (Gloucester, 1987), but it cites more current research in more detail. Anne Osborn, Riverside Public Library, Calif. (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review
Gr. 8^-12. This updated edition in the Encyclopedia of Health series is just that--an encyclopedia. It is organized to examine the disease from a historic perspective forward: each chapter follows an AIDS-related issue from its late 1970s^-early 1980s identification and discusses the social and medical changes in information, attitude, and treatment to the present. While the author's credentials certainly support the book's accuracy, no documentation exists other than occasional references within the text as to date or source of information. This is unfortunate because the book does an excellent job of updating YA collections with current AIDS/HIV information while integrating the disease's history appropriately throughout the text. An introduction by C. Everett Koop; a foreword by Dale C. Garell, a pediatrician and physician of adolescent medicine; and appendixes of organizations, further reading, AIDS hotlines, glossary, and picture credits round out this well-written yet undocumented volume. --Frances Bradburn
