Booklist Review

Dealing largely with proteins and carbohydrates, Edelson gives credence to the saying ``you are what you eat'' in his overview of how behavior and emotions are influenced by food. Circumspect about the research findings he cites (which he documents only in part) and wary about self-experimentation, Edelson is nonetheless enthusiastic about the potentials of diet manipulation for management of such conditions as insomnia, depression, and obesity. His investigation of those treatment possibilities is intriguing as is his discussion of the effects of malnutrition on brain development. While his descriptions of the ways neurotransmitters affect brain functioning are ultimately clear, his text does require close reading. Abundant illustrative material (including some charts, at least one of which needs further clarification) offers readers a bit of a breather though, and a glossary of terms will help them handle the profusion of scientific terms and concepts. Not a complete picture but a responsible and informative one. Index. Gr. 10-12. SZ. 612'.822 Brain / Nutrition [CIP] 87-7999
