CHOICE Review

As we move from the industrial revolution to the information age, our views of the world change. Computer technology is leading the way by providing ever increasing amounts of data. The ability to manage, process, and understand these data will decide how successful we will be in governing our world. Salton provides an excellent technical overview of many aspects required for data management. Casual readers should look elsewhere. Perhaps the only weak point of the book is the title, which belies the extent of information covered. Topics include the information environment, the computer environment, the automated office, text editing and formatting, text compression, text encryption, file-accessing systems, conventional text-retrieval systems, automatic indexing, advanced retrieval systems, language analysis and understanding, automatic text transformations, and paperless information systems. Each chapter is self-contained (including references); Salton also includes chapter arrangements for three disciplines--computer science, linguistics, and library science and technology. For those interested in the technical aspects of information technology, this book is an excellent start. -H. J. Bender, University of Maryland, University College
