CHOICE Review

Litwak's study examines theory and research on how informal primary groups and large secondary and formal organizations can work together to care for the increasing number of older people who now survive past the point where they can effectively care for themselves. Central to this examination is the concept of analyzing and matching group structures and tasks to determine which group (primary or secondary) is best suited for a particular task. The book is designed as an aid to gerontologists, sociologists, social workers, and policymakers as well as others concerned with developing more humane and long-lasting support systems for the aged. Structure and inner organization of the book includes three appendixes and excellent references on topics of aging, primary group dynamics, and formal social systems; author and subject index; endnotes for most chapters. Graduate students, upper-division undergraduates, and general readers in the areas of gerontology and sociology.-J.S. McCrary, formerly Lycoming College
