CHOICE Review
This third installment is probably not the last of an ongoing monographic series devoted to the life and works of one of America's most celebrated contemporary architects. The first volume covered Meier's early career (1964-84) and appeared in 1984 (CH, Apr'85). A second volume was published in 1991 and featured works done between 1985 and 1991. The present volume continues the pattern of the first two, providing hundreds of stunning illustrations (in both color and black and white) of Meier's latest buildings and projects, along with the architect's own commentaries on each project and short essays on Meier by leading critics, architectural historians, and fellow architects. In this volume, Frampton explores some of the architectural sources Meier may have been using in recent years, while Rykwert argues that Meier, who has sometimes been accused of not evolving much as an architect, "still finds ever more perfect solutions within his approach and is open enough to look at each problem in a new way." Also included are a postscript by architect Arata Isozaki, a selected bibliography, and a chronology of Meier's career to date. Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and up. M. W.
