Resumen: "A sequel and companion to Richard Meier, architect (Rizzoli, 1984), this substantial new volume resumes the documentation of the numerous and varied works created since 1984 by one of America's most important architects and a winner of the Pritzker Prize for Architecture. Meire's crisp, dynamic, and elegant designs stand forth in all their purity in this illustrated volume designed by Massimo Vegnelli. Included are his Museum for the Decorative Arts and the Museum of Ethnology, both in Frankfort: the Getty Center, Los Angeles; The Hauge City Hall and Central Library; the Canal+ Headquarters, Paris; and several private houses. Twenty-eight projects in all are presented, as well as a chapter devoted to Meier's object designs."--Back flap of cover

CHOICE Review

During the last quarter of the 20th century, Meier emerged as a major force in US architecture and a celebrated figure internationally. Unlike many of his colleagues, he has never wavered from pursuing a consistent personal style during his 40-year career. That style is predicated on the belief that the legacy avant-garde modernism of the 1920s still provided a rich basis for new design, responding to the significantly different needs and wishes of the present. Meier's practice, which grew to be very substantial in the 1980s and continues to flourish, validates this approach. His buildings are sophisticated and cerebral, but also engaging to a broad audience--the Getty Center in Los Angeles has become a veritable civic center for the region. This hefty book, composed mostly of illustrations, underscores the extent to which Meier has varied his theme in meaningful ways, how his vocabulary has evolved, and how it is adaptable to many different scales, purposes, and places. This lavish pictorial record is foremost an architect's book, but it is also the best compilation available of a major figure in the field and thus should interest others as well. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
