Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Building on the positive features of the economic commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL) structuralist approach to Latin America's severe economic problems, this book advances innovative strategies for improving long-term development prospects in the region. The authors first identify inherent failures in the CEPALista theory and then propose a revitalized scheme that focuses on removing internal barriers to change while nurturing the mechanisms and institutions that can strengthen indigenous technological progress. They emphasize throughout the importance of development strategies that will invest Latin Americans with the capacity to adopt, and adapt to, rapid technological progress.

CHOICE Review

This is a remarkable volume of essays on Latin American economic development. No other recent work on Latin America addresses the fundamental issues of the development process in such an innovative fashion. Individual contributors are first-rate scholars who have imaginatively combined the intellectual traditions of the Latin American structuralists in North American institutionalists. The 11 chapters cover a broad range of topics including the debt crisis, manufacturing in Argentina, agrarian reform in Mexico, import substitution, science and technology policy, and development theory. The result is a thought-provoking mixture of theory and pragmatism that challenges the conventional wisdom on Latin American development. The editors should be congratulated for successfully combining such diverse topics into an integrated and readable volume. Indeed, in contrast to many recent publications on development, this clearly written book does not require readers to have advanced degrees in mathematics. In short, this volume is a fitting tribute to J.H. Street (1915-88), a highly respected scholar and Latin Americanist, to whose memory the book is dedicated. It belongs in every Latin American collection and should be read widely. -J. T. Peach, New Mexico State University
