CHOICE Review

This excellent study of medieval and reformational spirituality from 1150 to 1600 is the second book of three on Christian spirituality and is part of the multivolume series, ``World Spirituality.'' Major spiritual trends arising during this important period for Christianity along with their complexities and drawbacks are clearly delineated. These include the diverse spiritual qualities of the major religious orders; the gradual widening of spiritual practice from the confines of the monastery to the world at large; the shift away from focusing on the risen Christ to the human Jesus, particularly his passion and death; the rise of devotional practices, Mariology, and women's movements; and the reformational response to these trends, including the marginal movements of the Radical Reformation. The inclusion of medieval Eastern Orthodox spirituality in this volume is highly valuable since it stands in marked contrast to the happenings in the West and presents an alternative to the excesses of that age. There is always a danger in attempting to summarize the profound thought of the great mystical writers. In most cases, the book succeeds here as well, and the flavor and insights of these writers are conveyed. The scholarship is of the highest calibre. Highly recommended for all libraries.-A.
