The letters of the Apostle Paul changed the world like no others before or since, and they continue to strike us afresh with their panoramic vision of human history and destiny.

Preeminent New Testament scholar and churchman N. T. Wright here offers a fresh perspective on the Apostle Paul's content and convictions. Wright ranks Paul as "one of the most powerful and seminal minds of the first or any century," endlessly engaging and perennially elusive. Yet, with recent research, Wright argues, we can now sketch with confidence a new and more nuanced picture of the Apostle and the radical way in which his encounter with Jesus redefined his life, his whole thought-world, his mission, and his expectations for a world made new in Christ. The result: a masterful, engaging, and enlightening portrait that situates Paul in his time and for our own.

CHOICE Review

Wright uses four "worlds" as lenses for his fresh approach to Paul. First is that of Judaism, then Hellenistic culture, Paul's Roman citizenship, and finally his belonging to the ekklesia. Central to Wright's thesis is that God's covenant to give Abraham a single family was fulfilled in Messiah Jesus. Paul's fellow Jews thought God's covenant gave them special privilege instead of responsibility to take that covenant to the whole world. Wright argues that Paul takes such themes as creation, covenant, and judgment, and reimagines them around Messiah Jesus. He rejects post-Enlightenment assumptions that do not allow either Paul or Jesus to be Jews. He takes the significant phrase pistis christou as denoting the faithfulness of Jesus, not faith in Jesus. By that faithfulness the creator God is revealed as the covenant-keeping and redeeming God. Wright cogently argues that Paul never saw the ekklesia as superseding Judaism, but as completing Judaism. Using the lenses of Hellenistic culture and Roman citizenship, Wright shows how Paul's idea of the parousia was countercultural. Jesus was true Lord--the mighty empire was but a caricature. This book delivers what it promises. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. Upper-level undergraduates through faculty/researchers. J. E. Lunceford Georgetown College
