CHOICE Review

Reflecting a thorough grounding in biblical scholarship, Johnson offers not just another college-textbook introduction to the NT writings, but a sustained interpretation of the origins and functions of the documents in the early church. Among the most significant interpretative chapters are those that survey the individual books, chapters on the claims of the first Christians, on resurrection faith, and on the memory of Jesus in the church. Treatment of the 27 texts concludes with a discussion of canon summarized in ten theses intended-and certain-to be provocative. Johnson's impressive book will be given serious attention by NT scholarship, and, as such, it ought to be accessible to upper-division majors, graduate students, and faculty. Its usefulness is enhanced by indexes and especially informative annotated bibliographies following each chapter. Neither maps nor illustrations are included.-F.M. Gillman, University of San Diego
