"Protestant Hopes and the Catholic Responsibility begins with a description of hopes of many Protestant churches for Christian Unity as expressed through the World Council of Churches. Father Tavard's understanding of the Churches amazes me. He has given the clearest, the most precise and the most sympathetic description of its nature and purposes that I have seen anywhere. No Protestant could have described it more fairly. Having dealt with Protestant aspirations, Father Taverd then outlines the essential responsibility of Catholic if they are to be worthy of the great opportunity that presents itself to the Christian world. He reminds Catholics that for over a century they too have a movement for Christian Unity ... he pleads for spiritual ecumenism and asks, 'what is the ecumenical importance of the General Council called by Pope John XXIII.
