Resumen: The practice of Centering Prayer, which Father Keating presented in his bestselling Open Mind, Open Heart, is the beginning of a process of spiritual growth. In this present work he outlines and explains the actual stages of his process. In the course of numerous workshops and retreats Father Keating is asked many questions regarding contemplative practice. How will it affect my life? Where does it lead us spiritually? What obstacles will encounter along the way? Why is it necessary? How does it work? The author says in his introduction This is an attempt to provide a road map, as it were, for the journey that begins when Centering Prayer is seriously undertaken, and to point to some of the recognizable landmarks on the journey as well as its ultimate destination... The regular practice of contemplative prayer initiates a healing process that might be called "the divine therapy"... The gift of contemplative prayer is a practical and essential tool for confronting the heart of Christian discipline... while at the same time establishing the climate and necessary dispositions for a deepening relationship to God and leading, if we persevere, to divine union.

Library Journal Review

Keating, a well-known Trappist priest and retreat leader, provides an excellent, basic introduction to contemporary contemplative practice in ordinary life. He integrates classic Christian teaching with 20th-century psychology, presenting meditation as spiritual therapy. His aim is to lead people from emotional and temperamental reaction to spiritual freedom, out of which contemporary global problems can be addressed. Keating is especially good at addressing the ``why'' of spiritual practice, though he also discusses the ``how'' and the stages of spiritual development. Booklist Review

Keating continues the work on "centering prayer" he began in Open Mind, Open Heart by providing a framework for the practice of Christian contemplation in everyday living. After first describing the human condition, Keating allows both contemporary psychology and classic Christian spiritual masters to engage in dialogue in a way that allows the reader to understand what inhibits spiritual growth and what encourages it to blossom. Keating's style is easy to follow, and the inclusion of insights from many people who have shared centering prayer adds immeasurably to the text. ~--Mary Deeley

The Rev. Thomas Keating was born Joseph Parker Kirlin Keating in Manhattan, New York on March 7, 1923. At the age of 5, he had a serious illness and made a bargain with God, that if he lived to be 21, then he would become a priest. He graduated from Fordham University in 1943. He expected to be drafted in World War II but received a deferment to enter the seminary. He was ordained a priest in 1949.

He was the founder of the Snowmass Interreligious Conference and a member of the peace council. He was a pioneer in the worldwide Christian contemplative prayer movement and popularized centering prayer, a method of silent prayer that allows one to rest in the presence of God. He wrote more than 30 books and created various multimedia projects including Awakenings, Active Meditations for Contemplative Prayer, and Centering Prayer: A Training Course for Opening to the Presence of God. He died on October 25, 2018 at the age of 95.
