Jesus Symbol of God surveys scriptural data, the key moments in the development of doctrine, and the distinctive horizons of our contemporary world to develop a comprehensive and systematic Christology for our time. The task of Christology is to explain what it means to say Jesus is the bearer and revealer of God in the Christian Community, the decisive mediation of God's salvation - or, in other words, the symbol of God.

CHOICE Review

Haight (Weston Jesuit School of Theol.) offers a major survey of Christological and closely related soteriological developments beginning with biblical texts themselves, through Eastern and Western Christological and soteriological discussions, Nicene-Chalcedonian creedal definitions, and finally, an analysis of modern/postmodern soteriologies and christologies. His discussion focuses more clearly on Christological than on soteriological issues, with Christology viewed as a "subdiscipline" of theology. Whether discussing the New Testament or later developments, the author concludes that Christologies have been consistently pluralistic, with no final criteria for determining their validity. Though he asserts that Christology's moorings must be based in the "historical" Jesus, Christology is not merely a historical encounter: rather, it is "existential-theological." Creeds, he insists, remain "symbols" rather than descriptive statements. In "Constructive Christology," Haight turns to the interaction of Christological and soteriological issues in modern theology, beginning with divergent theologies of Schleiermacher and Barth as a background, followed by discussions in contemporary theological concerns. Notably, Haight insists that "pluralism" must play a major role in constructing any modern Christology. This, along with his understanding of Christ as "symbol," surely constitutes a challenge to contemporary Catholic and Evangelical theology. A welcome addition to current Christological debates, and a must for all theological libraries. Undergraduate through faculty. R. F. Berkey Mount Holyoke College
