Preface / Kenneth Hagen -- The history of Scripture in the church / Kenneth Hagen -- Catholic interpretation of Scripture / Daniel J. Harrington -- Evangelical interpretation of Scripture / Grant R. Osborne -- Lutheran interpretation of Scripture / Joseph A. Burgess -- Conclusion : convergence and divergence / Daniel J. Harrington.
Resumen: How is the Bible read in the churches today? Was the Bible always studied as it is now? Is modern biblical scholarship a source of unity or division among the churches? This collaborative venture explores such questions in the hope of clarifying the ecumenical potential of biblical study today and in the history. Church-historian Kenneth Hagen sketches the history of biblical interpretation from early Christianity to the nineteenth century. Three New Testament specialists –Daniel J. Harrington, S.J., Grant R. Osborne, and Joseph A. Burgess– then explain how the Bible is interpreted in the Catholic, Evangelical, and Lutheran churches, respectively. As a way of focusing the similarities and differences, each exegete presents an exposition of Ephesians 2:1 - 10. In a brief conclusion, Harrington sketches the areas of their convergence and divergence. This book will have special interest for biblical scholars, ecumenists, and students wishing to understand what unites and divides the churches today.
