CHOICE Review

This volume documents a design competition led by art-design group Land Art Generator Initiative (LAGI) on the occasion of the 2023 German Federal Horticultural Show in Mannheim, Germany. Their goal: transforming a deaccessioned US military base into a clean-energy park that both benefits and involves a community formerly excluded from the site. Fittingly, LAGI used the kleingarten or allotment as a model, asking designers to propose cultural solutions to technological problems and, in so doing, to encourage collective engagement alongside individual stewardship. The book includes descriptions and extensive color renderings of the short-listed entries, which are richly diverse in focus and invention, followed by shorter accounts of other notable entries and a helpful glossary of clean design terminology. The winner, "Energy Circus" by Chai Yi Yang, employs unobtrusive photovoltaic (solar power generating) systems within the familiar vernacular of allotment farming. In contrast, several other designs imitate natural forms--waves, trees, flowers--so as to aesthetically integrate renewable power mechanisms within a park setting. The program as a whole provides an imaginative template for developing greening programs in other urban communities. Summing Up: Recommended. All readers. --Dawna L. Schuld, Texas A&M University
