Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Deeply researched and scrupulously even-handed, this work provides readers with a clear and accurate understanding of human trafficking and related issues related to socioeconomic inequality, human rights, and international law.

Human Trafficking: Examining the Facts exposes falsehoods, half-truths, and distortions about trafficking that have gained traction in America's political and cultural discourse. When warranted, it also confirms the veracity of other claims about the nature and infrastructure of trafficking networks and the harrowing experiences of women, men, and children trapped in those dehumanizing systems.

Special areas of focus include chapters devoted to quantifying the scope and reach of human trafficking around the world; prosecution and prevention strategies; the experiences of trafficking survivors and the important role they play in anti-trafficking efforts; and the successes and failures of anti-trafficking initiatives carried out by governments and law enforcement agencies around the world.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

CHOICE Review

Lederer has consulted with and worked for a myriad of government agencies and non-profits with a focus on human trafficking and Title IX issues. Her work typically concentrates on women, which means that the present study focuses overwhelmingly on prostitution and sexual slavery. The book defines well its subject, methodologies, and outcomes, and provides useful further readings. Lederer aggregates data on related studies, giving her work the appearance of a meta-analysis or systemic review. This is the strongest part of the work, allowing the author to review and critique different methodologies. The book is broken down into 24 questions across six chapters, which are easy to read and digest, particularly for students and casual readers. What is curiously absent is any discussion of ethnicity or race. Lederer's fixation on sexual slavery minimizes other forms of human trafficking, such as labor exploitation and smuggling people across borders. She offers brief sections on labor exploitation, but these are cursory and likely only mentioned because they led to court cases in the US. Overall, this is an excellent examination of the methodologies for studying human trafficking and sexual slavery in particular. Summing Up: Recommended. All readers. --Walter Michael Fontane, McNeese State University
