CHOICE Review

In an age of academic fragmentation and discipline (sub)specialization, rarely does someone dare a comprehensive statement in a major area of research. It is therefore refreshing to find a work such as this. O'Collins (Gregorian Univ., Rome) has produced a Christological accounting that is breathtaking in scope: its 14 chapters range from models of careful textual treatments of the Jewish background of Jesus, the life of Jesus, Jesus' resurrection and his traditional titles (chapters 2-6), to the historical give-and-take of the great Patristic and medieval debates (chapter 7-9) and the vexing philosophical questions of incarnation, salvation, universalism, and divine presence (chapters 10-14). O'Collins successfully balances the academic search for truth with practical concerns for justice and equality, all the while preserving the center of liturgical celebration. Although he does treat traditional questions in traditional ways--often doggedly defending established positions--the book is steeped in, though not encumbered by, a thorough knowledge of all the problematic epistemological and hermeneutical issues. Carefully and lucidly written, the book is appropriate for anyone interested in Christology. This is a mature book from a seasoned scholar on an important subject. General; upper-division undergraduate through professional.
